What is Advanced Conversational Hypnosis in Therapy?
Forget everything you've seen in movies about hypnosis. There are no swinging pocket watches or loss of control.
Advanced Conversational Hypnosis is a collaborative therapy where we use the natural flow of our conversation to help your unconscious mind unlock its own innate ability to heal and change.
Think of it this way: your unconscious mind is like the operating system of a computer, while your conscious mind is the user. Sometimes, "bugs" like anxiety, phobias, or self-doubt get into the operating system. ACH is a way to access and update that system comfortably, without a struggle.
What Does a Session Feel Like?
A session with me feels like a focused, deeply relaxing conversation. You are always in control, aware, and an active participant.
My role is to gently guide your mind using specific, compassionate language patterns that:
Bypass the "critical filter" that often blocks new, positive suggestions.

What is Clean Language?
Clean Language is a therapeutic style of questioning that gently guides you to explore your own words, images, and metaphors. Instead of being told what to think, you’re invited to discover what’s true for you — making insights deeper, more personal, and easier to act on.
David Grove's Clean Language: A Paradigm Shift in Communication
David Grove (1950-2008), a New Zealand-born psychotherapist, observed that traditional therapeutic language was often contaminated with the therapist's own assumptions, metaphors, and interpretations. He developed Clean Language in the 1980s as a radical methodology to honor the client's internal reality perfectly.
Core Philosophy
The client is the only expert on their own experience. The therapist's role is not to fix, interpret, or lead, but to act as a gentle guide, using the client's exact words to explore their inner landscape. This creates a psychologically safe space where the client's unconscious mind can reveal its own structure and path to healing.
The "Clean" Principle:
"Clean" refers to the practitioner's commitment to minimizing their own influence. This means:
Using the Client's Words: Never paraphrasing or interpreting.
Asking Specific, Neutral Questions:
The questions are designed to direct attention, not content.
Utilizing the Client's Metaphors:
The client's metaphors for their problem (e.g., "a dark cloud," "a heavy weight," "feeling stuck in quicksand") are treated as literal landscapes to be explored. Grove believed that the symptom *was* the solution, encoded within these metaphors.
The Syntax of Clean Language:
Grove developed a set of about a dozen key questions. The most famous and frequently used ones are:
* **And is there anything else about [client's word]?** (Exploring attributes)
* **And what kind of [client's word] is that?** (Developing qualities)
* **And where is [client's word]?** or **And whereabouts?** (Spatial orientation)
* **And what happens next?** (Temporal sequence)
* **And then what happens?** (Continuing the sequence)
* **And that’s [client's word] like what?** (Eliciting a metaphor)
The questions are often prefaced with "And..." to create a seamless, non-disruptive flow of attention.
How it Works Therapeutically:
Instead of the therapist analyzing a problem ("Why do you feel this way?"), the client is guided to self-model their experience. By repeatedly asking these clean questions about their own words and metaphors, clients:
1. **Develop Self-Awareness:** They see the components and relationships within their own psyche.
2. **Uncover Hidden Resources:** Strengths and solutions often emerge naturally from the metaphor itself (e.g., discovering "a ray of sunshine" within the "dark cloud").
3. **Facilitate Organic Change:** The change comes from within the client's model of the world, making it more congruent, sustainable, and empowering than imposed solutions.
Clean Language is a foundational methodology that has since been integrated into other modalities like Symbolic Modelling, Clean Space, and Emergent Knowledge.

I’m Sally Price, a hypnotherapist and Clean Language practitioner, and the founder of Hypno on Point. After five years of study, still ongoing and a lifetime of curiosity about the mind, I now help women who are returning into the workforce to overcome Imposter Syndrome so you can lead with confidence and peace of mind. I believe that real change doesn’t come from being told what to do, but from discovering your own inner resources—and learning how to trust them.
